ついに実測でも50Gbpsを超える光通信が可能に！
この分野での技術進化も、まさに日進月歩で、ついに毎秒テラビットクラスの情報を送れる1.125Tbpsというスピードまで実現しました！ でも、あくまでもこれは研究所内でトランスミッターとレシーバーをダイレクトにリンクさせて計測した結果に過ぎません。実際に光ファイバーケーブルや銅線でデータを送ると、距離が長くなればなるほどスピードダウンは避けられず、理論値よりも途中で起きる信号ロスによって遅くなってしまうのが現実でしょうかね…。
ところが、このほど米イリノイ大学（University of Illinois）の研究チームは、垂直キャビティ面発光レーザー（VCSEL）を用いた光ファイバー通信で、普通の室温環境にて57Gbpsの実測スピードを達成。通信ケーブルは熱を持ってくるのが一般的ですけど、たとえ80度を超える温度まで上がったとしても、常に50Gbpsの高速通信を維持することができるようになったと発表されていますよ。

グーグル、月額10ドルの固定電話事業に参入へ
グーグルが、アメリカの一部地域でサービス展開している光ブロードバンドサービス、「Google Fiber」。同社はこの度、そのFiber回線を利用し、月額わずか10ドルで固定電話回線の利用が可能になるサービスを発表しました。その名も「Fiber Phone」です。
電話番号の管理にクラウドシステムを利用しているため、電話はもちろん、タブレットやPCからも利用可能で、国内はかけ放題。国際電話も「Google Voice」と同じ程度の料金で利用が可能になるとのこと。
現在利用している固定電話番号をそのまま引き継ぐこともでき、ボイスメッセージをテキストに変換し、メール送信する機能も搭載しています。在宅中は固定電話、外出中は携帯電話、といった使い方も可能になるとのことですよ。
